Humanscale Reveals A New Path Forward

In 2022, Humanscale unveiled a new task chair, the Path. This product features 10lbs of reclaimed fishing nets and 22lbs total of recycled plastic. Each Path chair is climate-positive removing 6 kg of CO2e from the atmosphere, replenishing 15 gallons of water, and generating 23 kWh of energy. Path joins 25 other Humanscale products that go beyond net zero, and are certified climate positive.

In Spring 2018, Humanscale introduced Smart Ocean, the first task chair made with recycled fishing nets. Then, in July 2021, they launched Liberty Ocean to build on their commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Each chair uses almost 2 pounds of recycled fishing net material. Both chairs are certified Net Positive, validated by the rigorous standards set by the ILFI's Living Product Challenge. Each time a Smart Ocean or Liberty Ocean is manufactured, Earth is left measurable better off as it is certified climate, energy and water positive.

Dell Incorporates Ocean-Bound Plastic in New Products

Dell first started working to recycle and use ocean-bound plastic in 2015. 2022 marks an important milestone in Dell’s existing use of ocean-bound plastics, expanding beyond packaging into a suite of technology products and soft goods, including the Latitude 5000 series, the fan housing in the Precision 3000 series mobile workstations, and in the fan and fan housing in Dell OptiPlex Micro desktops and Precision Workstations. Dell has also extended the use of this material in its EcoLoop Pro series of backpacks, sleeves, and briefcases which features 100% ocean-bound plastic in the exterior main fabric.

In 2017, Dell pioneered the use of ocean-bound plastic in their packaging, starting with the packaging trays for the XPS 13 2-in-1. They have continued to work with suppliers to collect, process, and mix plastics with other recycled material to create molded trays used for packaging select products. The trays are 25% ocean-bound plastic and 75% recycled PET, using no virgin materials. Dell has used ocean-bound plastic material in over 5.1 million recyclable packaging trays and endcaps.

Herman Miller Increases Use of Ocean-bound Plastic with Aeron Chair

Herman Miller announced that its entire portfolio of Aeron Chairs will contain ocean-bound plastic, including a new color, Onyx Ultra Matte, which contains up to 2.5 pounds (1.13 kg) of mismanaged waste found near waterways per chair. These material changes in the Aeron Portfolio specifically are projected to save the ocean from over 150 tons of plastic annually - equal to approximately 15 million single-use plastic water bottles.

Aeron is the latest in a growing list of products Herman Miller has reengineered using ocean-bound plastic. The effort also includes parts of the recently launched OE1 Workplace Collection, the Sayl Chair in Europe, utility trays as part of pedestal units, and its latest textile collection, Revenio which is made of 100% recycled materials and includes biodegradable polyester. The company is also reducing its footprint by adding ocean-bound plastic to returnable shipping crates that send seating parts to and from suppliers and poly bags used to keep products safe during transit.

By integrating ocean-bound plastic into all these products and packaging solutions, Herman Miller estimates to divert up to 234 metric tons of plastic from the ocean annually, equal to preventing close to 400,000 milk jugs or up to 23 million plastic bottles from entering the ocean annually.

CPI Second Wave® Payment Cards

CPI Card Group Inc, a payment technology company and leading provider of credit, debit, and prepaid solutions, introduced the first-to-market payment card featuring a core made with recovered ocean-bound plastic. In the first quarter of production, CPI produced and delivered over 10 million Second Wave® cards, diverting at least 10 tons of plastic from entering the ocean. Additionally, CPI’s ocean-bound plastics supply chain in Haiti is a part of the same supply chain utilized by HP for its products. Trek brand launch Bontrager Bat Cage, XR Trail Mountain Bike Grip Set, the “Plasket”

In 2021, Electra, a Trek brand, launched the “Plasket,” a bike basket made with recycled ocean-bound plastic, which sold out on the first day it was offered. Each Plasket is made using one pound of ocean-bound plastic sourced from Oceanworks, offering consumers the chance to help clean up the world’s oceans with every purchase. The first production run of Electra’s Plasket will save 3,645 cubic feet of landfill space and 9 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

In 2020, Trek brand, Bontrager, released a line-up of three new XR Trail Mountain Bike Grip models, each of which features a core made from recycled ocean-bound plastic. The mountain bike grips were developed in collaboration with Plastix, which sources used fibers and rigid plastics primarily from the maritime industry, including end-of-life fishing nets and ropes that would have ended up in the sea or landfills.

In 2019, Trek Bikes re-released the Bontrager Bat Cage, a popular mountable water bottle holder, now made of ocean-bound Nylon from recovered fishing nets from Chile. In one year alone, Bat Cage will remove 44,000 square feet, or 3,850 pounds, of fishing nets from the ocean in partnership with Bureo.

Solgaard Shore-Tex Collection and HomeBase and Solar Boombox Ecosystem

Solgaard, a design-driven, sustainable luxury travel goods company, introduced a collection of unisex bags and backpacks crafted in the brand's exclusive proprietary SHORE-TEX™ fabric made from plastic waste collected from beaches and riverways in the Philippines.

Solgaard has also unveiled a new ecosystem of products, the Solar Boombox, Solar Juicepack, and HomeBase charging station, on Kickstarter. These products use solar energy to keep digital devices powered and when it comes to end-of-life, the unit's shell can be recycled, as can the fabric mesh covers - all made from ocean-bound plastic.

Solgaard's innovations see the continuation of the company’s pledge to remove five pounds of plastic waste from the ocean for every product purchased. In addition to integrating ocean-bound plastic into its products, Solgaard ensures that 100% of their packaging is fully recyclable and has eliminated single-use plastics from all their products and packaging.
